Farnham Road Hospital

Farnham Road Hospital Redevelopment Plans

Elevation Illustration of Hospital Development

As part of our investment programme to create modern hospitals to assess and treat people with mental health problems, drug and alcohol problems and learning disabilities we are proposing to redevelop our current hospital at Farnham Road Hospital in Guildford. This will enable us to provide more personalised care in a respectful environment which aids recovery.

The new hospital will create a supportive environment where people feel safe and have privacy with single bedrooms, therapy spaces, safe gardens and recreation areas. We will develop flexible hospital space to meet the future needs of the communities we serve to the latest environmental standards.

Proposed Changes to Farnham Road Hospital

  • We will be retaining the existing hospital building along Farnham Road and plan to link this to the new hospital through a pedestrian walkway
  • The Noel Lavin Unit and Nightingale Building will be demolished along with a number of other outdated buildings to make way for the new hospital
  • The new hospital will be two storeys high and will be lower in height than the existing Noel Lavin Unit
  • There will be more green spaces and foliage around the new hospital than currently
  • Comunity services will be located in buildings focused around the West of the site
  • The main hospital entrance will be accessed via Bray Road, which will also be the access road to and from the car park
  • There will be separate access routes for emergency vehicles from Farnham Road and Genyn Road
  • Access routes for service vehicles will be from Ludlow Road

Inside the Hospital

The hospital has been designed to make public and therapeutic areas easily accessible with lounges and day spaces at the entrance to the wards followed by more private bedroom space. It will include:

  • Therapeutic and recreation areas for art and craft, multi-purpose spaces for exercise groups or drama therapy, a fitness room, computer room and library
  • Safe gardens and outside spaces will be directly accessible from each ward along with more public garden areas for all opposite the hospital's main entrance
  • Pedestrian access from Farnham Road will lead through to the new hospital whilst a more private route will allow clients access from the main building along Farnham Road to the new hospital to benefit from the therapeutic facilities
  • Public areas will include a cafe for everyone to enjoy
  • The hospital will include facilities for people who are brought in by police in need of a place of safety (Section 136)
  • There will be four wards in the new hospital to treat adults with mental health problems. One of these wards will be an intensive care ward

Getting it right

We want to improve our hospitals and the way we provide our hospital services. Our plan is to:

  • Ensure 24 hour assessment and treatment for all
  • Provide person centred care based on the needs of each individual
  • Improve staff satisfaction
  • Mainstream services to ensure access for all and to reduce stigma

We are also investing in better buildings for some of the other teams that support hospital services such as the Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Teams. These teams see people in their own homes and work closely with people when they are in hospital to prepare them for returning home.

We anticipate that the new hospitals will be open in the next three to five years.

Our ambition for your hospitals

1. Creating respectful places

We will ensure that all individuals have their own bedroom and bathroom and that there will be single sex areas on each ward

We will provide a wide range of therapy facilities and give everyone easy access to safe outdoor space

We will create clean and hygienic hospitals that will be designed for, and with, people who use our services. They will be more energy efficient and cost less to maintain

2. Treating people well

We want to offer hospital services on fewer sites. This will not mean fewer services but it will ensure there are proper levels of staff support and a wide range of therapy services at each site

3. Involve not ignore

We will ensure we focus on meeting the specific needs of individuals. Older people with mental health problems such as depression and psychosis will be treated on different wants from older people with problems such as dementia

We will provide different services for people who need shorter term assessment and treatment and those who have longer term recovery needs

There will be a greater focus on recovery with a wide range of therapies and Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Teams at each hospital
