The clinic offers specialist advice on the diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: a range of conditions seen in young children who were exposed to alcohol in the womb.
It carries out detailed assessments of young children's speech, language and brain functions relative to their age. These assessments include photographic analysis of the child's facial features to complete the diagnosis.
The disorder is estimated to affect between 1 and 3% of the population.
The aim of the service is to identify the disorder in childhood so that allowances can be made to prevent secondary social and psychological conditions developing in the long term - such as social exclusion and mental health illnesses for example.
The service is led by Dr. Raja Mukherjee, an expert in this specialist area, who supervises and co-ordinates the FASD team.
