Service Description

The Liaison Psychiatry aims to provide a coherent service and to make mental health care a priority for both acute and mental health trusts

. It is a nurse-led service which provides holistic psychosocial assessment to determine patients’ mental health needs and their risk to themselves or others in line with NICE guidelines for self-harm (2004). Individuals are assessed by a qualified liaison psychiatric nurse and signposted to more appropriate support and mental health services. The Liaison Psychiatry Service provides a single point of referral from A&E, MAU and wards only. It constitutes of two Psychiatric Liaison nurses for Working Age Adults (18-65yrs) and two nurses for Older Adults (over 65yrs), both working under the supervision and support of a speciality consultant psychiatrist.

Referral Process

All patients are referred by the medical team Royal Surrey County Hospital.

Referral Criteria

Adults aged 18 years and above who present with a mental health problem and are at risk to themselves and/or others.
