A message from the Education Manager

Our Education Manager is responsible for Continuous Professional Development (CPD), statutory and mandatory training, and leadership and management functions.

CPD provides employees with a framework to develop practical and professional skills that make a difference to performance, and helps our Trust meet the requirements of our Clinical Strategy. CPD requirements should be discussed with your line manager as the application process lies with each divisional directorate.

We have an established Foundation Leadership and Development Programme, accredited through the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM). This equips staff who are new in their roles as leaders with the confidence and competence to create a shared purpose for our staff doing different work, inspiring them to believe in our shared vision and values so that they deliver benefits for patients, their families and the community.

We are committed to supporting the continuous development of our workforce including those with the Agenda for Change bands 1-4. Our aim is to support a number of initiatives to ensure that we maximise the contribution healthcare support staff make to achieving safe and effective care. These include apprenticeship pathways, distance learning, literacy support and foundation degrees.

We provide soft skills micro-programmes, which are short workshops aimed at developing targeted skills and competence across a wide variety of subject areas such as supervision skills, time management and  project management.

We also have a coaching network. Coaching is a process of managed reflective time that results in personal insight and clarity of actions in order to help you to become better at the jobs you do.

Elearning resources

We actively encourage employees to participate in CPD. There are multiple e-learning opportunities available that can be accessed for free.

Elearning for Healthcare

Elearning for Healthcare is a Health Education England programme run in partnership with the NHS and professional bodies. A variety of free, interactive materials are available.

The Open University

The Open University offers many free elearning modules through their Open Learn and Future Learn portals.

The Commonwealth of Learning

The Commonwealth of Learning encourages the development of open learning and distance education knowledge, resources and technologies.

In partnership with the Gender Identity Research and Education Society (GIRES) we have launched an elearning module; Caring for Gender Nonconforming Young People. GIRES promotes research into gender identity development and together we have designed the module for healthcare staff of all levels and disciplines. The course is free and takes approx. 45 minutes to complete.

Leadership programme

Who should attend

Our Leadership Programme, which has been endorsed by the Institue of Leadership and Management, has been designed for people who are in a managerial role and are responsible for leading teams and/or services to achieve results. It addresses leadership tensions and helps people build the confidence and skills needed to lead effectively.

By applying the lessons of our programme you will be better equipped to handle the tensions of your role, you will:

  • Bridge the gap between senior management and the front line staff to build commitment and manage change.
  • Collaborate across the organisation to gain critical perspectives, solve complicated problems, create buy-in and manage politics.
  • Effectively manage complexity to take wise and productive action amidst rapidly changing conditions.
  • Leverage the experience gained from multiple life roles to increase your leadership effectiveness at work.
  • Build resilience to manage stress, uncertainty and setbacks effectively.

Staff feedback

This course has had such a positive impact upon me and the way I work. Having been acting up as a clinical lead within our team the elements of the course have helped me support staff, implement and manage change. The knowledge around leadership styles and the importance of adaptability have proved invaluable. I feel I am more able to step up into a management position in the near future with the tools I have acquired from the course. Seek out and Celebrate

We are involved in a project with the universities of Brighton, Surrey, and the Brighton and Sussex Medical School to promote a culture of compassion by celebrating those acts of compassion that we know occur daily throughout the NHS but often go unrecognised.

We have a team of Compassion Leads who have attended a range of training opportunities and are eager to disseminate their knowledge to others and identify opportunities to include compassion awareness.

Coaching

We offer supportive and consistent coaching for all staff, whatever your role or grade, to help you be better at what you do.

What is coaching?

Coaching helps develop a person's skills and knowledge to maximize their own performance. It is a thought-provoking and innovative process to help them raise awareness and so take responsibility for their actions. People who have experienced coaching say:

  • It improved their performance
  • It enhanced their resilience in challenging times
  • It increased their self-awareness
  • It improved their self-belief and confidence
  • It gave them greater focus and direction
  • It enriched their ability to relate to and influence others

What happens in a coaching session?

The key principle to coaching is belief in the potential of the person being coached. A skilled coach is able to support a person's thinking process by using their listening, questioning and observation skills or by giving feedback. The coach's main focus is to be committed to the other person, supporting them to find their own solutions, helping them overcome their obstacles and giving them the confidence to take action.Coaching lasts for a defined period of time, usually up to six sessions. Goals are the start of the coaching relationship and evaluated throughout the sessions. Ideally your line manager should support your application for coaching, as well as give you the time and space for coaching. The content of your session is confidential.

Do I need coaching or mentoring?

People are often confused about whether they need mentoring or coaching. The main differences are:

Mentoring

  • May be more informal and meetings take place as and when the person needs support and guidance
  • On-going relationship
  • More long-term and takes a broader view
  • A mentor is usually more experienced and qualified (often a senior person) who can draw on their experience and knowledge

Coaching

  • More structured and meetings are scheduled regularly
  • Has a set duration
  • More short-term on specific areas / development
  • Coaching is not generally affected by the level or role of the coach, often the professional distance can give an objective and clearer perspective

Your application will be assessed upon receipt. If appropriate, you will then be emailed your coach's details. It is your responsibility to contact your coach and arrange an initial meeting. However, it may not be possible to discuss this with your line manager, so do indicate this on your application. Please be reassured that this will not affect your application for coaching. You can have up to six coaching sessions. The timescale, times and venues can be agreed direct with your coach.

Our coaches

Our coaches are drawn from different professional backgrounds and include some very senior staff who have a passion for developing others. All are on our Trust register and have been developed by trained facilitators, received regular updates and supervision workshops as part of their on-going development.

Career progression

Kevin's story

KevinCertifs.jpg Kevin Cherrington (pictured) is a cook at The Meadows at West Park Hospital who has completed the Team Leading Level 2 Apprenticeship certificate.  

The certificate enabled him to develop awareness of his and his teams behaviours, and the impact these behaviours have on the way they work. This will help Kevin to support his manager by taking on extra responsibilities with regards to the day to day running of the department. During times when Alistair, Kevin’s manager, is on leave, Kevin can now step up and deliver in his absence.

Kevin completed functional skills tests in English, numeracy and ICT in order to complete his apprenticeship pathway. Anne Rubin, functional skills tutor, says "Functional Skills are qualifications that equip people with practical skills to live, learn and work successfully. These vital skills are needed to succeed in all aspects of life."

Kevin says "When I first started the apprenticeship it felt like I had a mountain to climb. I worked with Anne on my days off and there were lots of anxious times. Some days I had lots of things given me and occasionally one person wanted me to do this and another person wanted me to do that. Special thanks to Gillian & Paul from Lifetime Training who helped me immensely." 

Kevin says "I would like to recommend that everyone in the NHS who has dyslexia or learning disabilities do what I did. Don’t let your disability stand in the way!"

Julie Gripton, Education Manager, says “The apprenticeship pathway replaced the vocational awards. These are work based and give you the skills and confidence to progress up the career ladder. We have well established links with colleges and other education providers who can support and help you. Statutory and mandatory training

Our Trust has a responsibility to provide various statutory and mandatory training. Statutory training is required to ensure that we are meeting our legislative duties. Mandatory training is an organisational requirement to limit risk and maintain safe working practices.

If you are unsure of what you need to meet your requirements please access the statutory and mandatory checklist on the Trust intranet for your role and discuss this with your line manager at your supervision.
