Mindworks Surrey launched an online campaign last month to help children, young people and families prepare for the return to school and manage some of the worries this can bring.
Mindworks is our Trust's emotional wellbeing and mental health service for children and young people in Surrey.
The Small Steps Back to School campaign featured six short videos from mental health experts offering practical advice on common concerns, including friendships, sleep, routines and starting a new school.
All our Small Steps Back to School videos, along with practical advice, are available on our campaign hub and have been shared on social media.
Children and young people are reassured that some back-to-school nerves are common, with the videos offering simple strategies to help them manage their worries and prepare for the new school year.
Aoife Kearney-Grieve, Mindworks Senior Clinician and Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist, said: “It’s completely normal for children and young people to feel a mix of excitement and nerves about going back to school.
“Changes in routines, friendships, classrooms and expectations can feel like a lot to take in, and every child settles back in at their own pace.
“A few back-to-school nerves are a natural part of adjusting to change. Feeling nervous doesn’t mean you’re not ready, sometimes it just takes a little time to find your feet again.”
While some back-to-school worries are common, families are encouraged to seek further support if they persist, become overwhelming or begin to affect a child or young person’s sleep, everyday life or ability to attend school. Parents and carers can speak to their child’s school or visit the Mindworks Surrey website for further support.
Schools, community organisations and professionals working with children, young people and families are also encouraged to share the resources.
