Silverwood has been hailed as a leading example of modern inpatient mental health care following a visit from the National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH).

The NTUH delegation visited Silverwood – our mental health inpatient service based in Chertsey and which opened in February 2025 - last week.

The visit will help inform their plans to redevelop their existing psychiatric ward and create a child mental health ward at their children’s hospital.

During the visit, Trust colleagues shared presentations on the development of Silverwood, followed by discussions and a tour of the site.

To mark the occasion, gifts were also exchanged between the Trust and the NTUH delegation.

NTUH Vice Superintendent Susan Shur-fen Gau said: “We have been extremely impressed by Silverwood and the high standard of care provided here. The environment clearly supports patients’ privacy and dignity, while also promoting both mental and physical wellbeing.

“It has been inspiring and informative to see how much thought has gone into every aspect of the unit, including the support and care provided for staff as well as patients. Silverwood is a wonderful example of modern mental health inpatient care.”

Emma Whicher, Chief Medical Officer, said: "Silverwood is a service we are enormously proud of, and it was a real pleasure to welcome Professor Susan Shur-Fen Gau and colleagues from the National University of Taiwan Hospital to it first-hand.

"The visit was a valuable opportunity to showcase everything that has been achieved at Silverwood and to share learning with international partners. It is hugely encouraging to see Silverwood recognised as an example of high-quality inpatient mental health care, with lessons that can help shape services both nationally and internationally."
