A canal boat volunteering group for people in recovery from psychosis

The Swingbridge Project is a weekly supported activity for people being supported by our Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIIP) team.

It’s run in partnership with Surrey Care Trust and gives you the chance to spend time outdoors, learn new skills, and be part of a friendly group, all while volunteering on a working canal boat.

You don’t need any experience and you don’t have to talk about your mental health unless you want to. It’s a relaxed, practical way to get involved in something meaningful, with no pressure.

“I’d been isolated and stuck at home for so long. Swingbridge was the first thing that got me out and gave me a reason to look forward to something.” - EIIP participant

What we do

Each week, we meet in Guildford and set off on the Swingbridge canal boat. You’ll have the chance to get involved in:

  • Light boat maintenance and cleaning
  • Litter-picking and towpath care
  • Rope handling and steering the boat
  • Making tea, preparing lunch and supporting others

It’s a calm and supportive space, with plenty of breaks, time to chat, and a real sense of teamwork.

Why join?

People tell us the project helps them:

  • Feel less isolated and more connected
  • Spend time in nature and get into a routine
  • Build confidence by doing something useful
  • Meet others with shared experiences
  • Improve their mood and mental wellbeing

"It's great to be outdoors and it really helps my mental state"

Who can join?

You can join if:

  • You’re currently being supported by the EIIP team
  • You’re interested in group activities or volunteering
  • You’d like to try something new, even if you’re nervous

The project is open to anyone receiving support through our Early Intervention in Psychosis service.

If you’re not currently accessing the service, you can still find out how to get help or speak to your GP about a referral.
