Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) describes the different ways in which members of the public can inform and shape research.

PPIE is different to research participation where members of the public can directly take part in a study (for example, as part of a clinical trial). Public involvement describes when members of the public use their views and personal experience to help to plan, deliver, evaluate and share health research.

At SABP, our goal is to carry out research ‘with’ or ‘by’ members of the public rather than ‘to’, ‘about’ or ‘for’ them:

  • We have developed an active Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) group of people who have experience in memory and mental health.
  • If you choose to become a PPIE member, you will be invited to meetings or asked to comment on documents digitally, and we will ask your opinion on how a research study should work.
  • What you tell us will help make research more relevant and improve the quality of treatment and care.

What do PPIE members do?

  • Design, read and give feedback on research materials (such as participant information sheets, informed consent forms, questionnaires and letters).
  • Comment on research proposals and/or protocols.
  • Help to identify research priorities.
  • Co-design communications materials to raise awareness of health research, such as posters and leaflets.
  • User testing.

Who can take part?

Any NHS service user, carer, or member of the public over the age of 18 is invited to apply to become a member of our PPIE group.

How do I get involved or in contact?

If you want to get involved or find out more information, call our office on 01372 216584 or email research@sabp.nhs.uk

Our team is mix of research doctors, research nurses, clinical research practitioners, research assistants, facilitators and administrative support.

Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) at SABP

We have developed an active PPIE group of people who have experience in memory and mental health. To date, we have worked with commercial sponsors, universities, the NIHR and the NHS.

Our PPIE members:

  • Have experience and knowledge to take part in projects where documents are required to be commented on and annotated for their readability and usability, and
  • Have experience in in user testing of electronic systems.

We require partners to compensate our PPIE members and a discussion between us and the partner will take place before any PPIE project is agreed.

If partners would like documents to be commented on, we allow a week for this kind of project, once all necessary documents have been sent to the Public Involvement Lead.

If you would like to work with us on a PPIE project, then please call our office on 01372 216584 or email research@sabp.nhs.uk
