Who we are:

The psychiatric liaison team works in general hospitals, for example in the emergency department or in-patient wards. We work with people from the age of 18 onwards where the team can consist of older age and working age consultant psychiatrists, mental health nurses, social workers and occupational therapists.

We provide psychiatric assessment and treatment to people who may be experiencing distress whilst in hospital and provide a valuable link between mental and physical health. There is a lot of evidence that medical patients have a high rate of mental health needs, but can respond positively to psychological support or drug treatments. Psychiatric liaison teams are very helpful in detecting these needs, such as depression or anxiety and then signposting or referring on for specialist support.

Who do we work with?

The Psychiatric Liaison Team work with any patient within the hospital who requires psychological help to manage their condition, including, but not limited to:

  • Older people who suffer from dementia or delirium
  • Individuals who have self-harmed and are being seen in the Emergency Department.
  • People who have an existing mental health problem and are currently in hospital with a physical illness.
  • Those who have been diagnosed with a physical illness and need some emotional support to adjust to this.

Where we are located?

The Psychiatric Liaison Team are based in the Emergency Department and the wards

One of the ways we do this is by asking people who use our services and their carers about their experience and how we could do things better. If you have had experience of using this service and would like to give us some feedback we would love to hear it. This will help us improve the service in the future.
