We conducted a public consultation at the beginning of the programme to seek and share views, to provide information, and to hear concerns before decisions were made. Since then, we have been working with our staff, service users, carers, and local partners to plan and co-design our new mental health inpatient services.

Our Lived Experience Group

To help design Silverwood, we set up our Lived Experience Group which meets, approximately, three times a year. We explore different topics in each session, including what it is like to visit our inpatient services as an inpatient or as a visitor, the use of outside spaces, and sustainability.

Whether you currently use, or have used our services in the past, are a carer or family member, trust governor, or a member of our staff, we are always looking for people with an interest in mental health to get involved. For more information, please contact the team at: newhospitals@sabp.nhs.uk

Working with Surrey Coalition to make more voices heard

The designs for the new hospital in northwest Surrey, on the site of the former Abraham Cowley Unit, are continuing at pace. We’ve engaged with people who use our services, families, carers, and with colleagues across the Trust, to understand their requirements and hopes for the new mental health inpatient service, but we want to do more.

We’re working with Surrey Coalition of Disabled People to involve their wider networks of people with lived experience, families and carers to make sure even more voices are heard.

If you use Surrey and Borders services, or care for someone who does, you can share your views on what’s most important to you about the new mental health inpatient services in Surrey and get involved in the ongoing planning work by contacting Wendy from Surrey Coalition of Disabled People at: Wendy.Smith@surreycoalition.org.uk

Consultation

Our consultation work began in 2008 when we looked at the options for building new mental health inpatient services in Surrey.

After we completed Farnham Road Hospital, in May 2016, we held three public workshops in Chertsey, Cobham and Redhill, to talk to people about our next mental health development for people in Surrey.

Participants were asked, ‘What requirements would a really good new mental health hospital have?’ This question generated lots of discussion and we collated feedback during each event. The themes arising varied between each workshop but included:

  • Access to services
  • Accessibility/location/transport
  • Additional activities for people in hospital
  • Engaging people who use our services in design
  • Facilities/physical environment
  • Joint working: seamless interface with other services
  • Staff/clinical culture
  • Safety and security
