The process of designing, planning, and building a new mental health inpatient service is a time-consuming and lengthy process. This is the largest programme we have committed to, and our new services must be able to face any challenges that the next decade, and beyond, may throw at them.

Silverwood - A new mental health inpatient service in northwest Surrey due to open in Autumn 2024

Silverwood is the newest mental health inpatient service arriving in northwest Surrey in Autumn 2024. Silverwood is replacing the now-closed Abraham Cowley Unit (ACU) in Chertsey, which opened in 1988 and provided mental health services to people in Chertsey and the surrounding areas.

At Silverwood, our focus is on providing a supportive environment where everyone feels valued and heard. The state-of-the-art unit will offer four modern wards, each with 16 private, comfortable rooms. With two lounges in every ward, there's ample space to unwind and connect with others. Each ward has a dedicated garden and there will be a woodland area for supervised walks.

For our dedicated staff, we've ensured that Silverwood is not just a workplace but a supportive community. From lounges and kitchenettes to a staff garden for relaxation, we're committed to offering a positive work environment.

Silverwood will provide:

  • Four brand new wards (64 beds in total), all with single ensuite bedrooms to provide greater privacy and dignity for people using our services
  • Two lounges on each ward allowing people more choice and flexibility
  • Greater access to garden space; each ward will have a dedicated garden and there will be a woodland area for supervised walks
  • A variety of dedicated spaces which will be tailored to the clinical needs of the ward, including activity, therapy, and sensory-type calm rooms
  • A dedicated therapies area with access to a garden area for sports activities
  • A music room, air-conditioned gym, art room and dedicated spirituality room
  • Improved on-ward entertainment systems and better ways to stay connected to families and friends
  • Staff will have access to kitchenettes, a staff lounge and a dedicated staff garden. We will provide improved staff change areas and better bike storage. We are also building a new Education suite with state-of-the-art digital equipment.
