two staff members conducting a research project Nearly 200 participants are being sought by our Research and Development team for a ground-breaking blood test study which could lead to early diagnosis of dementia.

The study is open to people aged 45 and over who have been referred to our Memory Services or who are experiencing memory problems and live in Surrey or North East Hampshire.

Called READ-OUT, the study is part of the Blood Biomarker Challenge. It has a high accuracy rate and can potentially identify different types of dementia such as Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia and mild cognitive impairment. Professor Ramin Nilforooshan, Consultant Psychiatrist and director of Research and Development at our trust, said: “Early diagnosis is key to improving the lives of people with dementia. It gives people time to plan their lives, get their finances in order or maybe take a holiday they never had. It takes away the uncertainty.”

Participants in the study will be required to provide a single, 20ml blood sample, along with information on their medical history. Our Research and Development team is also involved in the new wave of clinical drug trials for dementia - treatments which are designed to slow or even modify the disease.
