Service Description

AFLoaT provides high-quality care for women or birthing people who experience moderate to severe mental health difficulties as a result of fear, trauma or loss related to the maternity experience. AFLoaT is a psychologically led service which encompasses Surrey Heartlands ICS, available in North West Surrey, Guildford and Waverley, Surrey Downs and East Surrey and 4 maternity units (St Peter’s, Royal Surrey County, Epsom and East Surrey Hospitals).

Working as a small multi-professional team we will provide holistic care that draws on the skills and interventions provided by specialist clinicians within the AFloaT service. AFLoaT will provide a range of advice, support, treatment and care plans.

What we do:

  • Screen referrals following which service users will either be:
    • Offered an online assessment, via video call
    • Provided specialist advice and signposting
  • Following assessment, service users will be:
    • Offered an intervention with a specialist clinician
    • Provided with advice and signposting
  • Pre-conception support e.g. preparing and planning for future pregnancies
  • Psychological interventions, including 1-2-1 or groups for birth trauma, tokophobia and perinatal loss. 
  • Interventions are offered face-to-face or online. Please note that depending on clinician availability, service users may need to travel across the county for face-to-face interventions
  • Provide information, signposting or other resources for partners and/or families.

Referral Process

We accept referrals from health and social care professionals, including GPs, obstetricians, midwives, health visitors. This service is not open to self referrals.
