Perinatal
Perinatal is the time from when you become pregnant up to a year after giving birth. This includes the following stages:
- Antenatal or pre-natal meaning 'before birth'
- Postnatal or postpartum, meaning 'after birth'
-
Perinatal, the whole period, from pregnancy up to a year after birth
There's no right or wrong word to describe the time around pregnancy and after birth. You might hear your doctor or midwife use any of these terms.
It’s a time of major physical, emotional and social change. While it’s common to feel a wide range of emotions during this period, some people may also experience mental health difficulties, either for the first time, or as a return of a previous condition.
Perinatal mental health
Perinatal mental health refers to the emotional and psychological wellbeing of women/birthing people during pregnancy and in the first year after giving birth.
This can include a range of mental health problems, such as:
-
Depression or low mood
-
Anxiety, panic, or intrusive thoughts
-
Postnatal psychosis (a rare but serious condition)
-
Bipolar disorder
-
Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
Many people experience mild or temporary symptoms, but some may need extra support, especially if symptoms affect their ability to function day to day, bond with their baby, or feel safe and well.
1 in 5 women/birthing people experiences a mental health problem during pregnancy or after giving birth.
Is this something I should be worried about?
It’s completely natural to feel different after having a baby, tired, emotional, overwhelmed or uncertain. But if these feelings are persistent, intense, or interfere with everyday life, it’s important to talk to someone.
You are not alone, and support is available.
