The Surrey High Intensity Partnership Programme (SHIPP) has been shortlisted for a HSJ award in the category of Mental Health Innovation of the Year.

SHIPP was launched in 2017 by Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Surrey Police in partnership with A&E, ambulance and adult social care colleagues. It supports people who frequently present to emergency and mental health services in crisis and who have complex mental health needs.

Through SHIPP, people are supported by a specially trained mental health liaison police officer, alongside their care coordinator, and receive a multi-agency care and response plan. This provides clear boundaries and ensures all services adopt a consistent approach to helping the person.

Mel Tomlinson, SHIPP Complex Case Co-ordinator at Surrey and Borders Partnership said: “We’re delighted SHIPP has been shortlisted for this award. The programme has not only made better use of health and police resources and delivered huge cost savings it has also transformed the lives of the highly vulnerable people who have used the service.

“The Mental Health Innovation of the Year Award recognises teams that are leading the way to delivering better services, empowering service users, putting them at the centre of care, engaging the community and reducing stigma. Being recognised in this category is a huge honour.”

SHIPP is a partnership between Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Surrey Police, Surrey County Council, South East Coast Ambulance Service Foundation Trust, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, Royal Surrey County Hospital and Ashford and St. Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation.
