Our trust is encouraging residents across Surrey and North East Hampshire who are experiencing a mental health crisis to seek help at one of our Safe Havens.
This reminder comes as part of World Suicide Prevention Day, which takes place on Wednesday,10 September and aims to raise awareness of the help available for people in emotional distress.
There are five Safe Haven drop-in centres across Surrey and North East Hampshire, which are open outside of normal working hours. They provide a warm and welcoming environment for those aged 18 and over who are struggling with their mental health. Visitors can access expert help and guidance from mental health practitioners provided by our trust.
For people who do not wish to visit a Safe Haven in person, Virtual Safe Haven drop-in centres are available via video call so that people can seek support from the comfort of their own home.
A new video has been launched online to encourage more people to reach out and access the service.
The Safe Havens are run in partnership with local mental health charities and provide immediate support for people in crisis. They are open every day from 6pm to 11pm in Aldershot, Epsom, Guildford, Redhill and Woking.
Each Safe Haven is staffed by a mental health practitioner from our trust, alongside trained Safe Haven workers from specialist mental health charities. Visitors are welcomed into a calm, confidential space where they can speak openly, receive support and, if needed, be referred for further care. There is no need for a referral or appointment.
Irene AppiahBosompem, Mental Health Practitioner at Aldershot’s Safe Haven, said:
“A lot of people don’t know that Safe Havens exist. People may go to A&E or struggle through on their own while we are here waiting to help them.
“I would encourage everyone to come and use a Safe Haven, we can support them. I don’t want anyone to sit at home and struggle; We are here to help.”
Emma Whicher, Chief Medical Officer, said: "Taking the first step to seek support can be difficult, but it is one of the most important things you can do for your mental health. Our Safe Havens provide out-of-hours access to experienced mental health practitioners in a safe and supportive environment.
“If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, I encourage you to reach out and make use of these services - timely support can make a real difference."
Our Mental Health Crisis Helpline is also open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For urgent mental health support, call 0800 915 4644 or dial 111 and select the mental health option.
