How trauma-informed approaches are being used locally
These case studies show how teams and services across Surrey and north east Hampshire are successfully using trauma-informed approaches in their work.
They highlight that even small, meaningful changes can make a big difference to:
- People’s experiences of care

Spotlight on Practice: East and Mid HTT’s Trauma-informed journey
Anna and Nicola from the Trauma-Informed Service have been working with the East and Mid Home Treatment Team to deliver bite-sized training and reflective sessions focused on trauma-informed practice. Despite high caseloads and staffing pressures, the team showed strong commitment, meeting every two to three weeks to build confidence and develop their skills.
Staff reflected on the power of simply listening and validating patients in distress, rather than feeling they must “fix” everything. They also explored ways to make routine processes, such as completing service forms, more collaborative, and discussed the importance of choice, recognising that some patients may prefer a phone call over a face-to-face appointment.
The work has already sparked a QI project to improve information shared with GPs, ensuring it is concise, relevant and includes the patient’s voice.
This learning programme has been championed by Team Manager Geoffrey Allen and Physician Associate Chloe Denyer, who protected time for staff to attend and joined the sessions themselves.
